Our first Queer Market Barcelona: the day it all became real
The night before, the doubts. The day of the market, the magic.
There was something different in the air on April 25th.
We'd spent weeks preparing for Queer Market Barcelona with a mix of excitement and apprehension that any founder knows all too well. The Sculpted Lines Hybrid Shorts already existed online, in photos, in messages from people who wanted them but hadn't yet had a chance to try them. But that day was going to be different. That day we were taking them out into the streets.
To Diputació Street, to be exact. The heart of the Queer Market organized by the Xarxa de Comerç Divers de Barcelona (Barcelona Diverse Commerce Network).
We didn't know what to expect. Would we sell anything? Would people like it? Would we just stand there staring at the display while everyone else walked right past?
Spoiler: no.
Assemble the stall with our own hands
Gege spent days sewing the T-shirts and crop tops for the Pink Monkey x Sexy & Cutie collection. One by one, by hand, with the same dedication we put into every piece. She wanted the stall to have variety—so that anyone who came in could take something home even if shorts weren't their thing that day.
When we finished assembling it and looked at it from afar, we realized something: this was real. It wasn't photos on a screen. It was our Barcelona-based queer fashion brand, in physical form, ready to be seen.
Our hearts do race a little at that moment. We're not going to lie.
Barcelona's queer community does not disappoint
The Barcelona Diverse Commerce Network created a space where the community was the protagonist, not the backdrop. And it showed.
The people who came to our stall didn't just come to look. They came to ask questions, to touch the fabric, to understand what was behind the pieces. When we told them that everything is made locally with sustainable, locally sourced, and recycled materials, many nodded with a smile that meant something.
Queer fashion in Barcelona has an audience that understands. That values. That recognizes when something is done with intention.
And then something happened that we didn't expect.
The first sales in a first market
Selling in your first market isn't guaranteed. Everyone tells you that. "It's to test the waters, to learn, to make contacts." That's what they tell you.
But that day we sold. Pieces from our first collection found their owners. Someone left with a brand-new pair of Sculpted Lines Hybrid Shorts. Someone else took home one of the T-shirts sewn by Gege.
It's not a huge number. But it's our number. And it has a priceless weight.
What we took home
At the end of the day, as we were packing everything up, we looked at each other and talked for a while. We left Queer Market Barcelona with new ideas, renewed energy, and something that's hard to describe but that anyone who has ever launched something small from scratch will recognize.
The certainty that it's worth continuing.
The queer sustainable clothing brand we once featured on a website now had a face, hands, real conversations. People in Barcelona had seen it, touched it, and bought it.
That's just the beginning.
